What's a red light?

Drivers in my town are pretty darn good compared to drivers everywhere else I've been. They are sometimes distracted, but for the most part they are alert, courteous, and competent. Except for one thing: the protected left turn. You see, drivers in Nebraska have a unique mentality: if I was there "in line" when the light turned green, I get to go through. No. Matter. What.

I had to drive from one end of town to the other a total of 8 times between yesterday and today, helping someone move. This meant passing through the busiest intersection in town, where the left-turners are particularly notorious for seriously not giving a shit. After my last run, I pulled over in the empty Borders lot to make a phone call, and then caught this. Keep in mind, the protected left turns red about 2 seconds before the light you see on camera turns green. The two grey Toyotas ran the light. The white Camry and the Titan ran it rather badly. The CC was awful. And by the time the Benz went through, a full seven seconds after his light went red, you could safely call him insane. Look how far back he was when the other light went green! He was lucky the other folks knew what to expect, or he might've found himself in a bit of a fender-bender. Also, if you look in the very left corner of the screen, you will see a blue Civic and a black Terrain, blowing the red left turn light in the opposite direction.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

It's a district in many large cities where police presence is scarce and promiscuous women roam freely...

WOAH! I didn't know this was normal in NE. I almost got in a nasty accident and was very rudely honked at by some jackass in Omaha that did exactly this. I thought I did something wrong since it was a confusing intersection. Apparently I was doing everything right, they were just idiots.

Another time someone laid into their horn, got irate, and I thought I was going to be attacked when I stopped after a green light turned red like this.

Yup, that's Omaha. I've honked at people before who have nearly hit me doing this, and they are very likely to honk back or flip the bird. Usually they're courteous, like I said, but at a protected left, they become different people.

Do you by chance remember where the intersection was? The worst ones are all along Dodge Street.

can be offset by the "I don't really have anywhere to be right now so I can just hit you" mentality. ;)

It has been a couple years, so I had to backtrack my route. Both happened along Dodge Street. I was almost rear ended on that second one, then they ripped past me on the right flipping the bird after I turned. Very aggressive and rude...

Wasn't there a song about a woman named Roxanne too?

Yea, she had some sort of government exemption where she didn't have to stop at the red light.

In Texas, red lights are generally considered to be a polite suggestion, rather than a specific command. It's ridiculous.

Is this not normal behavior everywhere? I've honestly grown so accustomed to it that I don't even care when it happens. And I still get honked for being the one to stop if I happen to be in the turn lane...

I just noticed that it seems to be the only thing that drivers around here consistently fuck up.

72nd and Dodge can be a pain in the rear. The whole I'm turning left NOW thing it still a pet peeve whenever I'm in town.
